Market update

The unrest in the Middle East is dominating the news and affecting the markets. Below is our brief assessment of the situation.

Recent developments in the Middle East have once again reminded us how quickly geopolitics can change, and how such events can create turmoil in global financial markets. The conflict has led to increased uncertainty about energy supplies, trade routes and the future political stability of the region. These are issues that naturally attract the attention of investors around the world.

For the Norwegian stock market, the development so far has been positive. Oil prices have risen significantly, which historically has often had a supportive effect on the Norwegian economy and Norwegian shares. At the same time, global stock markets have fallen in line with the news and market participants’ assessment of risk. Rising oil prices have strengthened the Norwegian krone against most currencies, which has lifted the yield curve somewhat. However, the current level is no higher than it was a few weeks ago.

It’s important to emphasize that such events, while dramatic, rarely change the long-term fundamental outlook for companies and economies. Throughout history, markets have shown a remarkable ability to absorb geopolitical turmoil and return to more normal conditions when the situation clarifies. For investors with a long-term horizon, it is therefore rarely appropriate to make quick and emotionally driven adjustments.

The portfolios we manage for our customers are built with just such periods in mind. A combination of Norwegian and Nordic bonds, Norwegian equities and global equities provides a robust balance between stability and return opportunities. This diversification is one of the main reasons why we recommend sticking to the long-term strategy, even when the news landscape is challenging

At present, we see no reason to make portfolio adjustments as a result of the situation in the Middle East. Market movements have been manageable, and the portfolios are well positioned to withstand periods of increased uncertainty. At the same time, we are monitoring developments closely and continuously assessing whether there is a need for adjustments. Should the situation change in a way that affects the long-term outlook, we will naturally inform and act accordingly.

We know that periods of geopolitical unrest can raise questions and concerns. Please contact us if you would like a review of your portfolio or need a more detailed explanation of how we assess the situation.
